I forgot to mention that the NaOH - HNO3 treatment might remove the
orientation mark on the face of the window - therefore, mark this location
on the ground edge of the window with a soft lead pencil before treating
the windows.  I think that 2 hours each in the alkali and acid should be
enough when followed by overnight in methanol.
