Just an instant (lateral) thought.  The s value of an (incompetent) monomer
will differ quite substantially from the average of (monomer-dimer in
equilibrium). Whilst the latter will admittedly give only an imperfect
gaussian in a g(s*) profile, should one not be able to resolve (at least
adequately for the purpose) the two peaks in the said profile ?  If the
incompetent monomer is actually there, of course.
