Re: Significance?
Dear all,
The question raised by J. Mackay and commented by some in the last few
days is an old theme that has troubled many ultracentrifuge people, yet
found no definitive answer. I put my rather pessimistic view on it in my book
(D. The Uniqueness problem , pp 413-416, Foundations of ultracentrifugal
analysis, Wiley, 1975). Probably, it is my friend K. E. Van Holde who paid the
most serious attention to this theme through a number of his
excellent sedimentation equilibrium studies on associating biological
macromolecules. I hope more intensive discussions will take place in this
forum to clarify the scope and imitations of ultracentrifugal methods,
thereby we can more firmly grasp what may or may not be demanded for
the ultracentrifugal characterization of chemically reacting systems.
Sincerely,
Hiroshi Fujita
