new version of program SVEDBERG

RASMB'ers,

An updated version of my program SVEDBERG is now available for download
from the RASMB FTP site. The new capabilities are summarized below.
The distributed file (sved9701.exe, 640 KB) is now a WinZip
self-extracting archive that will automatically expand the compressed
files and launch the installation program. For details see the files
Install.txt and Whatsnew.txt

----------
(1) Added optional new 'modified Fujita-MacCosham' fitting function for
improved fitting of low molecular weight species in conventional cells,
and improved fitting before the meniscus is clear. This is discussed in
Philo, J. (1997) "An Improved Function for Fitting Sedimentation
Velocity Data for
Low-Molecular-Weight Solutes", Biophysical J. 72:435-444.

(2) Increased the maximum number of species from 3 to 4.

(3) Added ability to directly fit molecular weight (s/D) instead of D,
and an associated units form to specify units for MW.

(4) Added ability to constrain s and/or MW values for one species to a
multiple of the value for another. Thus if you believe the sample
contains a mixture of monomer and dimer, you can force the sedimentation
coefficient and/or s/D value for the dimer species to appropriate
multiples of the properties of the monomer.

(5) Increased maximum number of data files per fit from 9 to 40.

(6) Improved computational speed for fitting ~3-fold and for Claverie
simulations ~7-fold by compiling portions of code.

(7) Added ability to read XL-I interference data files, and a choice
between the file naming conventions of the new and old Beckman software.

(8) Added the option of manually entering a meniscus position inside the
radius of the first actual data point (often needed for interference
data).

(9) For interference data, when the first data point in a data set is at
a radius greater than the meniscus, the fitting functions adjust to
account for the fact that the Beckman data acquisition defines this
first data point to be zero.

(10) The program default state is now to fit the baseline offset.

(11) It is now possible to set a default specifying the font size to be
used when printing the results of fits.

(12) Revised menu structure for graph formatting commands.

(13) Help file to explain graph formatting and printing features. (Help
file does not cover other aspects of the program, only the graphing
package common to SVEDBERG, XLGraph, and SEDNTERP).

(14) New option on the "Printing Options" dialog box to force the use of
colors or black-and-white only.

(15) New "Format...Legend" option that allows editing the text and other
properties of the graph legends.
