Re[2]: Cleaning #3

We have been instructing Field Service to use toothpaste or an eraser
since we started shipping the instrument. Once you have cleaned the
lamp the best you can, it must be clean of all residue. 90+% alcohol
or ethanol works fine.

The four thumbscrews are factory adjustments and should not be
touched. This adjustment is very critical and I do not recommend it to
be performed in the field.

The lamp assy. should be marked for its orientation prior to removing
it and cleaning.

Once your Field Service Engineer instructs you on the cleaning and
replacing the assy., ask him/her if it will impact your
contract/warranty coverage if your alignment winds up being a Service
Call.

PS - If your XL-A PC is connected to a modem, we can offer remote
diagnostics. For more information send to
     JLPorter@ccgate.dp.beckman.com, include your Field Service
     Engineer's name.

Best regards

Caution: get your service guy to show you how to do optics cleaning at
least the first time! If you forget to turn off the power when you lift the
slit assembly you max out the photomultiplier - it will recover but it may
take overnight. The alignment of the lamp can get screwed up if you are not
careful! We simply prefer to do it ourselves to save time - it take me < 30
minutes with the pre- and post-scans to do it!

So someone asked me by E-mail and I think it's a good question! My
Beckman service tech prefers the eraser method so he never answer my query -
Which toothpaste is best for this job - tarter control Crest or some
Australian blend from the outback?
