We have used a number of nonaqueous solvents for sedimentation experiments.
Most pertinent, perhaps, are sedimentation equilibrium experiments that
do not develop much hydrostatic pressure to induce leakage. A reference
to such equilibrium experiments (both in short and long [~3mm] columns)  using
dichloroacetic acid as solvent is:

M Goodman, EE Schmitt and DA Yphantis, J. Amer. Chem. Soc. 84: 1283-88 (1962).

We have seen no problems in numerous velocity experiments using ethanol as
solvent.
